Squidhead 2018 Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Well, we’ve been very busy preparing our very first show which was actually the release party of the album so, it was a lot of pressure for us. We had to prepare our costums and also learn how to play with those on. Playing with masks and full body costums for the first time was quite a challenge, I must say !
We also needed to bring some merch, scenic decoration, and physical copies of the album. It may sounds a bit basic but, as we are a self-produced band, we have to manage everything ourselves and it was a lot of work. We really wanted to give the best first show possible.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

On the musical point of view, we are playing a sort of modern melodic death metal with industrial textures. It’s a good mix of my personal favorites bands so, you should recognize influences of Fear Factory, Meshuggah, strapping young lad, etc…

The big difference is, of course, the fact that we have vocals now and we’ve also tried to make something a bit more catchy, more suitable for the stage.

3.Originally the band was all instrumental, what was the decision behind adding in vocals?

The strange thing here, is the fact that the project was always meant to be a « regular band » with vocals. But, a the time of the first record, I was alone doing the project. So, it was more convenient to do it all by myself and I’m not a good singer (like, really not). So, I took the situation as a good opportunity to release an instrumental EP. With a first record out, it was easier to find new bandmates because I had something to show them. It was like « hey, here is my music, do you want to join and make it evolve ? ». So, the instrumental EP was a good start, we had a lot of good reviews of it but we knew people were expecting more of the project. So here we are, more than 3 years after with an actual band and a full album to play live.

4.On the album you explored the writings of H.P Lovecraft, can you tell us a little bit more about the song writing?

We wrote the lyrics together with the bass player and this was new for us. We didn’t have much experience on this and we wanted to have this Lovecraft vibe on the album. The good thing here, is the fact that our bass player is also a writer that did release a first book inspired by Lovecraft universe so, it was not too hard for him to get it done (I just had to push him a bit and he did a pretty good job). From my side, I’m a roleplaying game nerd so, it was not too hard to find inspiration in those very rich backgrounds. Regarding the process, I always start writing songs titles, to set the mood of the track. Then we choose which title inspire us most and just keep writing until we have enough material for our singer. He is doing the final vocal arrangements and choose what to keep from all those lyrics.

5.On the new album you also went from being a solo project to a full band, can you tell us a little bit more about your decision behind hiring a full line up?

It’s simple, I’ve always wanted to play this music live. But the first EP would not have work well live, it’s more of a studio material. The idea behind forming a band was to get that « real band » vibe. I wanted to have real bandmates that would be involved in the creative process, not just session guys.
It’s a lot of extra work of course, because you have to deal with real people, with different personalities and you have to find those special guys that understand were you want to go and also want to go there with you. I must say, I’m very lucky to have found these guys, the’ve been doing an amazing job and the album sounds much better with their energy and creativity on it.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has done so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Well, we’ve only did our first show so far so, I would say, this one was the best ! (lol) It was a lot of stress for us to make this first one because
We are trying to make it look more like a ceremony and not just another local band gig. We’re using our own fog machine, a bit of light show, some esoteric banners and we enter the stage with costums and masks on, acting like members of a cult. When wearing full costums, you can’t just play like you’re in a rehearsal room, you have to play a character from start to finish. We’re doing our best to set a occult mood at the show and to stick to this Lovecraftian vibe we have on the album lyrics and cover.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

No touring yet as the band is only starting to play but we’re already receiving offers to play in different cities around so, we hope to have as much gigs as possible on the local scene and hope that it will help us build a good live reputation for the band. We’ll see what will happen !

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer material by fans of extreme metal?

So far, we are still waiting for most of the reviews (this can take some times as you most probably know). But the first feedback are very good so far so, we hope for the next ones to be as good. We’ll see in the coming weeks.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I honestly have no idea so far but, one thing for sure, I want to have the other bandmates more involved into the composing process. Those guys have a lot of personal influences that I don’t have and I’m sure we can get something a bit more agressive or darker but we’ll see what comes in the coming year. We will also see how the songs work on stage and it will most probably influence how we will forge the next sound of the band.

10.What are some of the newer influence you have brought onto the newer recording?

The newer thing on this album (except vocals of course) is the industrial vibe. This was the first time I’ve ever added keyboards and samples part on all songs of a record. I’ve always loved those sound textures that you can find in industrial music and it was a leap of faith for me. It’s nothing big on a technical level (I’m really not a good keyboard player), it’s just there to had a certain color to the whole sound and I’m glad it works. It add this little something to the ambience and I’m really happy with the result.

11.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I would like to thank YOU first, for this interview and for helping us to be seen so far away from our homes. It’s a great feeling really. And I hope you guys will enjoy the album. JOIN THE CULT.

Battlesword Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
First of all let me please thank you for giving us the chance to introduce our band to your readers! This really means a lot to us.
Since we released „Banners Of Destruction“ in April 2016, we tried to play live as often as possible to promote the album. But at the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017 our both guitarists left BATTLESWORD and we had to find new members again. That went faster than expected, but we first had to prepare the live-set for the shows, that were already booked. We recently started the songwriting for a new album and the first songs are already finished. So, we hope to enter a studio this year and to release a new full-length in 2019.

2. How would you describe the musical sound that has been presented on the recordings you have released so far?
We in principal play melodic death metal and combine it with traces of other metal styles. So you can find a lot of traditional heavy metal vibes on our latest album for example. There´s no certain or primal influence. We just focus on ideas that sound good and heavy in our ears. Normally we work out special ideas from our guitarists together in our rehearsal room. They come up with single riffs or nearly complete songs. Throughout the years we have created our own style and idea about BATTLESWORD. For us, the focus is always on the music and not on a certain image or trend.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored over the years with your music?
For the lyrics I´m inspired in different ways. Sometimes it´s based on literature or a cool movie, sometimes on personal experiences. To me it´s important to tell short self-contained stories that can be interpreted by everybody in his own way.

4. The band has been around for almost 20 years but so far has only released 2 full lengths, can you tell us a little bit more about the gaps in between releases?
BATTLESWORD was founded back in 1999. When the line-up for the band was completed, they recorded the first Demo „Crusade Of Steel“ in 2001. That demo was quickly followed by the first full-length „Failing In Triumph“. BATTLESWORD was lucky to find a label for its release and presented their music live a lot. But as often, the band had to face several line-up changes, when they were close to start working on a new album. That forced them to make a pause with the band. In 2008 Ralf, Ben and me joined and completed the band. We thought, that we have found a new stable line-up again, so we released our next demo „The 13th Black Crusade“ and began touring again. But in 2009 the next and not the last change within our line-up happened, as we had to replace our guitarist Ralf, who left BATTLESWORD. We were glad to find a new guitarist within a short time. But then we had to wait with the songwriting for the next album, due to a lot different personal issues.
We then released the two songs „Enemy Divine“ and „Where Demons Awake“ in 2012 in digital form for online promotion and to show the world that we are still alive. They were re-recorded and released as bonus tracks on „Banners Of Destruction“.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Battlesword'?
I think the founders of BATTLESWORD didn´t  think that much about giving the band that name as you might expect. I think it was a quite spontaneous idea and decision. Today the name for us is kind of a quality label. We have reached a certain level with our outputs and our energetic shows and we want to keep and surpass this in the future.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
An unforgettable show for me of course is my first one with the band and for sure the one from last year´s Metaldays Open Air and the "Schlacht um Otzenhausen", a German indoor event.
I think, playing live is why we all are part of this band and this scene. To play live is what we want most and we try to do it as often as possible. You can see and feel it, when you attend one of our shows, because it´s full speed from the first to the last note. We always just want to be honest and authentic. That´s what the fans should see and feel. We are still only some metalheads that want to play metal and have a good time on stage, as well as we are also still fans that bang their heads in front row to their favourite bands´songs. We are burning for our music and want to share it with as many metalheads as possible.

7. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Within BATTLESWORD every single member is burning for playing live. But as we all have fulltime jobs and/or family it is not so easy to play that often. Not to mention touring. The biggest problem is to find gigs where your expenses are covered. This year we will return to Slovenia for the Metaldays Open Air. Besides this we will play some further handpicked shows and festivals. There are also some gigs planned in Belgium, Italy and Luxemburg. But they may be realized in 2019 only, because we want to focus on the songwriting first this year.

8. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
We indeed have received any interest and we surely would love to get signed. But not at any cost. There have been many unserious offers in the past and we will be careful in the future. We have some labels on our list that we would love to work with and whom we will provide a demo of the upcoming release.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic death metal?
The feedback we received was overwhelming. We got so much positive response from nearly each continent, what we never had expected before. With our latest release we found new fans and friends worldwide as we for example could see by the album and merch orders. As well as our songs got airplay at many international radio stations. We still are very thankful for this and hope going one better with the next album.

10. What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
Currently only our bassist and one of the guitarists have some side-projects. They are also releasing stuff and playing shows. Christian has released a new album with his project EAARTH RECORDER for example and Ben will support mighty VADER with his other band RESURRECTED who released their latest album in 2017.

11. When can we expect another album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
As I mentioned before, we are currently working on songs for a new full-length album, that should be released next year, when we celebrate our 20th anniversary. Besides that we are also already planning all the things around that coming release, like layout, which studio to book or new merch for example. We are also looking for a booker to get us on stage more often. It would be great to play more festivals and to play more often outside Germany. Musically you can expect a new piece of melodic death metal with our trademarks and also some new influences.

12. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Every one of us has a wide range of music he likes. We are not limited and also listen to other music styles, too. But the common denominator is melodic death metal as it is played by Scandinavian bands.

13. What are some of your non musical interests?
I thinks there´s first of all sports to mention. We are partly interested in soccer and other kinds of sport. Being fan as well as active sportsman. There´s also interest in literature or cinema. But in the end we are nearly always spending most of our time and attention to metal.

14. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Surely! Thank you for your interest and support. If anybody has now become curious about us, we would love if you check us out at facebook, leave us a like and send us a message with an order or just with your feedback. Never stop supporting the metal underground!

Cadaver Putrefacto interview

CADAVER PUTREFACTO

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
JUAN GOMEZ: Hello, first of all, thanks for your interest in the band and interviewing us. The band can be said to be new, we formed it with my friend Daniel Ledesma in 2000 but we only did some rehearsals and then it dissolved. In 2015 we came together with the idea of recording some music and joined Leonel Grismado in the voices, among the three we recorded the first demo of the band, after that Daniel left the band. As we already had material to capture an entire album, we decided to do it together with Leonel, just the two of us and see what the answer was. We upload it digitally in November 2017 and we were really surprised by the good reception that the record obtained. That's why we decided to put together a full lineup and be able to present the music that we recorded live.

2. So far you have released a demo, ep and a full length, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on those recordings?
LEONEL GRISMADO: The sound of Cadaver Putrefacto has not changed in the different recordings, it was only refined to improve the proposal. In the Demo it was material for diffusion only so it might have been a little more rustic. And we also had another guitarist. The next EP, is with another guitarist, and served as a preview of what would be our first CD. As for the musical, the sound will always be the same: Death Metal.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
L.G .: As far as the lyrical aspect of the band is concerned, we may follow the trend of brutal death metal and its scabrous and bloody cliches. Although what differentiates us from the rest is that we really try to offer well-written lyrics with a little more content. The pain and horror that one human being can commit over another is a great source of inspiration for our brutal lyrics. Whether it is murder, jealousy, revenge, sadism, etc... the low and perverse of the human mind seems to have no limits. And we also have more fantastic lyrics of course, product only of our imagination. On the other hand other lyrics can deal with horror movies to which we are very affectionate in the band.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Cadaver Putrefacto'?
L.G .: There is no message or hidden meaning. Cadaver Putrefacto is a brutal name for a brutal band.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

6. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
L.G .: Regarding live shows none since recently at this time we are strengthening the lineup to present the album live. In a short period of time we will give our shows debut and we will see how the balance is.
J.G.: As previously said, the band is just now training to play live, we are currently Leonel on vocals, me on the bass, Pablo Giangreco on drums, and in the guitar recently joined Clovis Avile Torrilla, if all goes well we are going to begin to join some dates to start presenting our material, always in the scene Under Argentina, with respect to tours I see it very difficult because in our country playing this style of music is more a hobby than a profession, we all have our jobs and families and it is difficult to absent oneself for a long time from responsibilities.

7. The new album is getting in released through 'Brutal Records', how did you get in contact with this label?
J.G .: Actually the label contacted us. As I told you the album we did it digitally and we put it on different platforms, nowadays this way of spreading the music reaches many places and sometimes it brings good results. That's how the owner of the label Michael Howard heard us and he was interested in the band. We had some very pleasant talks listening to his proposal and we decided that it was a very good option to edit our album in physical format since it is a label that will distribute it in North America and Europe. We are really happy that they are interested in editing an Argentine band and that they are expressing themselves in Spanish.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of brutal and old school death metal?
J.G.: The truth is that the comments that come to us are very positive, to the page we get many messages from people from different parts congratulating us and asking how to get the album, and now that it will be professionally edited by the label Brutal Records will be able to get it anywhere on the planet. In the video of the Full Album uploaded to YouTube there are many comments from people who encourage us and that fills us with pride. We decided to make a Death Metal style of the old school that today many bands do not make (the current fashion is Slam), and less sung in Spanish. I think that also made call the attention on the record.

9. Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
L.G .: With respect to Pablo (the drummer) he has his own band of all life called STILLZONE which makes a crossover in the style of DRI or RATOS DE PORAO. Besides, he also plays with me in another death metal band called DISLEPSIA. The newly incorporated guitarist Clovis also has his own brutal project called REVENTOR and I play in: RIGOR MORTIS, TROPA NOISE AND DISLEPSIA.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
L.G .: Where the future directs us is a mystery. Although I assure you that he found us playing pure and extreme death metal. Nothing to modify or soften the style that is certain. Hopefully we can perfect everything and give us the opportunity to show our music wherever possible. And keep recording material of course.

11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
L.G .: What most influences the band is of course the classic death metal of bands like: Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Six Feet Under, etc ... nothing of modern crap. Now at the time of personal tastes we all agree on the band in which we are very open to all kinds of metal, heavy, thrash, death, black, grindcore, crossover, etc ... you would be surprised by certain musical tastes we have. But that is never going to make the direction of the band get out of the way of death metal.

12. What are some of your non musical interests?
L.G .: For my part, in addition to music, my other hobby is the viewing of horror movies and the reading of horror literature (Lovecraft, Poe, King, Hutson, etc).
J.G .: I have two passions, music and soccer. I'm a fan of Argentinos Juniors (the team where Maradona was born), it's a humble team from Argentina but it has a beautiful history and from which emerged many players who triumphed in the world.

13. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
L.G .: First of all thank for the interview and the interest in the band. We are relatively new and the diffusion and interest that people show us is very helpful. And tell them that we are not going to stop this death metal machine called CADAVER PUTREFACTO. That's safe. Death metal is not fashion, it's passion. We hope to continue to count on your support. Thanks and see you soon.

Temnein Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?
After receiving the final version of the album, we worked a lot on our live set, both in rehearsal room and in a professional stage as well to make a live pre-production. We did that to be ready for our first gigs with our new singer, the first one was a festival headlined by Benighted in July. This summer we've made a lyric video and shot a new video-clip with a professional director. We also prepared a lot of various stuff these last months: promotion matters, merchandising, lots of paper work for the label and booking related matters of course! So we were and we're still very busy since the recording!

2.You have a new album coming out in October, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
There are less complexity on the songs, more atmospheric parts and also a darker mood that fits the album's concept. We tried to make something more homogenous than our 1st album with songs focused more on emotion than on pure technical aspect. Nevertheless we've kept several elements that we had in the past: fast & aggressive parts, twin guitar harmonies, guitar solos and a lot of melodies.

3.Your lyrics cover philosophy and duality themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?
Duality & philosophy were the theme of our first album, it was written by our former singer so this is not our lyrics theme anymore. The concept of “White Stained Inferno” is about illness and all the difficulties to live with it, especially when it's a rare/unknown disease and when you're trapped in a hospital for a while. Some of us have been confronted to this at different degrees and one of us had a very tough time at hospital a few years ago. It was obvious to write about it and tell about all the psychological and physical pain that involve a serious disease.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Temnein'?
Temnein is an Ancient Greek word, written "τέμνειν", meaning "to cut". Etymologically, you can find it in the French word "tome" (volume) which is "a book cut into tome", or "atome" as "something you can't cut". The word "temple" is also derived from it as "templum" is a place cut from the rest of the world.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We had the chance to play some very cool gigs: 3 shows in Japan in 2014, supporting Mors Principium Est & Beyond Creation, a festival in Belgium last year headlined by Eluveitie, Powerwolf, Leprous, Primordial... We also opened in France for great bands such as Benighted, Gorod, No Return and many more!
Our live performances changed radically since the arrival of our new singer. We chose to now play with a click track and some samples included in the album will be played. That involved a lot of work in rehearsal and we took our time to shape it as best as possible! We did only two shows with this new configuration and it went very well!
Overall, we tried to be energic as much as possible with a lot of movements, interactions within the band's members and make sure to focalize into the crowd. We don't want to perform while watching our instruments and with a lower interaction to the crowd.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
Some French gigs are booked for the end of 2017 and next year. We aim to tour Europe next year and we're discussing with some agencies but nothing is signed yet! We'd love to play in festivals, an obvious goal for a band like us.

7.The new album is coming out on 'Massacre Records', how would you compare working with them to other labels that you have been a part of i the past?
Overall it's a similar way of working, but for the impact of the promotion it's quite different than our previous label (Mighty Music based in Danemark). The promotion/PR at Massacre is really bigger and we're very glad about that. We learned a lot from the PR from Mighty Music but we're more satisfied with Massacre. Nevertheless it's a bit early to really compare both labels on every aspects, the album cycle is far from over!

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of progressive and melodic death metal?
We’ve been receiving several reviews almost every day since early October and we're overwhelmed by the album global feedback! Many reviewers liked what we did for this new album and had mentioned the diversity within the record, so we couldn't be happier! The reaction for the previous album (404 B.C.) was more mixed, that's something we understood now that this 1st album was released almost 4 years ago. We think we'll be more satisfied with White Stained Inferno than 404 B.C. in the coming years!

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
It's a bit early to have a detailed plan of our future musical direction, but it could be something even more atmospheric, maybe with the addition of keyboards. We'll also try to make less long songs, creating something more direct and homogeneous. We'll see what the future brings!

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
For the new album, Ghost Brigade or In Mourning are some of our new influences: still melodic death metal but with a more atmospheric/post-metal side.
Otherwise, our influences are classic bands in melodic death metal (At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium), some more progressive outfits (Opeth, Nevermore...) and more modern/NWOAHM stuff (Kataklysm, Darkest Hour, Chimaira).
We always listen to different type of music, whether it is Metal or not. And we also love to discover or re-discover bands or musical styles. Here are some bands that we listen at the moment: Words of Farewell, Secrets of the Sky, While She Sleeps, Native Construct, Zero 7 (Flo). After the Burial, Regarde les Hommes Tomber, Opeth, Carpenter Brut (James). Archspire, Leprous, Within the Ruins, Perturbator (Jocelyn). God is An Astronaut, Junius, Tesseract (Jul). Oathbreaker, Au-Dessus, The Black Dahlia Murder, Igorrr (Val).

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Our singer is also passionate about dubbing and acting. He's taking professional lessons and starts to play roles in music videos and short-movies. He's playing the main character in our latest video-clip, released on late October!
For the rest of the members, music is our main passion so we enjoy some classic interests (sports, gaming, travelling, video games, motorcycling...)
